Американските компании за разплащателни карти Visa Inc и Mastercard Inc блокираха множество руски финансови институции от мрежата си, в съответствие с правителствените санкции, наложени заради нахлуването на Москва в Украйна.
Двете компании още в понеделник излезнаха с изявление, че предприемат бързи действия, за да гарантира спазването на приложимите санкции, като в допълнение ще дарят по 2 милиона долара за хуманитарна помощ.
Американското правителство нареди на Visa да спре операциите с руски банки и граждани в отговор на руската инвазия очаквайки да бъде увеличен обхвата на забранителния списък, като междувременно беше добавена и банка VTB, която е втората по големина банка в Русия.
В събота Канада, Великобритания, Европа и САЩ обявиха нови санкции срещу Русия след като международните кредитори блокираха достъпа и до международната платежна система SWIFT, а междувременно затвориха и въздушните си пространства.
Това доведе до паника в руските граждани, които масово теглят парите от сметките и депозитите си, заради риска от блокиране на опцията за теглене в брой.
